Empowering Through Action: The Arc CBO's Achievements and Milestones

At The Arc Community-Based Organization (CBO), our commitment to empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Busia is at the heart of everything we do. Since our establishment in 2014, we’ve embarked on a transformative journey, leaving an indelible mark on the community. Here are some remarkable achievements and milestones that define The Arc CBO’s impactful presence since day one:

Drafting a Comprehensive Disability Bill:

  • Early on, we championed the cause by drafting a comprehensive Disability Bill tailored to meet the unique needs of the Busia County community.
  • This legislative initiative speaks volumes about our dedication to addressing gaps in support and services for PLWD, advocating for their rights, and promoting inclusion.

Community Engagement Initiatives:

  • Deeply rooted in the community, we’ve initiated impactful projects, including the construction of the first disability toilet and the donation of a commode chair as assistive equipment for PWD in Busia Prison.
  • We’ve facilitated the purchase of salon equipment for female inmates, providing them with skills for a successful reintegration into society.

Active Participation in Training and Seminars:

  • We believe in continuous learning and staying informed about best practices. Active participation in various training sessions and seminars underscores our commitment to a dynamic and informed approach

Construction of Supportive Homes:

  • Recognizing the importance of safe and supportive living environments, we’ve taken the initiative to construct homes for individuals with disabilities.
  • This achievement reflects our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for PWD, providing them with a sense of security and belonging.

Training Programs on Tree Nurseries for PWD:

  • Actively engaged in training programs, including imparting knowledge on tree nurseries, we contribute to environmental conservation while offering sustainable livelihood opportunities for PLWD.

Wheelchair Procurement and Distribution:

  • Playing a pivotal role in improving mobility for PLWD, we’ve procured and distributed wheelchairs, including electric wheelchairs for a Board Member who is a deputy Principal at Nyakhobi Secondary School, courtesy of The Arc CBO and Sigalame High School 99 class.
  • Additionally, we’ve distributed crutches, prosthetic limbs, further contributing to the physical well-being and independence of individuals living with disabilities.

Supporting Education for PWD:

  • Demonstrating our commitment to breaking barriers, we’ve sponsored the education of individuals like Belinda, exemplifying our dedication to creating opportunities for PWD to pursue academic aspirations.
  • We provided 300 pairs of school uniforms to St. Martin’s Special School, ensuring students with disabilities have essential resources for their academic journey.

Community Sensitization Programs:

  • Actively engaging in sensitization programs within the community, we foster understanding and awareness about the challenges faced by PWD.
  • Our outreach endeavors to promote inclusivity and reduce stigma, including providing sanitary towels to enhance the dignity and well-being of women living with disabilities in the community.

Established in 2019 and rooted in Nambale sub-county, Busia county, The Arc CBO stands tall as a dedicated Community-Based Organization (CBO). Driven by passion, we implement comprehensive programs and services designed to empower individuals with Autism and Cerebral Palsy.
